DataNet Dial-Up Setup for Windows 98/ME/2000

Congratulations on choosing DataNet as your Internet Service Provider (ISP.)  This is the setup sheet to get your DataNet connection up and running as fast and as smoothly as possible.  Please read through each step carefully before starting.  Note that because of the different versions of Windows our users are using not every dialog box may not appear *exactly* as typed, but the meanings should be close.  Once you have successfully setup your DataNet dial-up connection the last step also provides an address to get the online email setup instructions.

  1. Starting from your windows desktop (What you see when you first startup your computer), double click on the "My Computer" icon in the top left hand corner (if you can't find the icon labeled "My Computer" try the icon in the top left hand corner of your screen).
  2. Double click on "Dial-Up Networking".  If a box labeled "Welcome to Dial-Up Networking" opens, click cancel.
NOTE: If you do not have a Dial-Up Networking folder or nothing happens when you double click it is likely you do not have a modem or your modem is not installed correctly.  These are hardware problems and are not covered in this setup.  Please phone us if you are experiencing these problems when attempting to setup your DataNet connection.
  3. You should now have a box open called "Dial-Up Networking".  If there are any other icons other than the "Make new connection" icon, delete them (click once on the icon so it is highlighted, then click File -> Delete).  Double click on the "Make New Connection" icon.
NOTE: Do not delete the Make New Connection icon!
NOTE: If a box labeled "Install New Modem" opens up, please see the NOTE in step 2.
  4. In the "Make New Connection" box, enter DataNet as the name of the computer you are dialing.  Your modem should appear in the "Select a device" box.  If it does not, click on the down arrow and choose your modem.  Click Next.
  5. Enter the Area code for Edmonton: 780 and the Telephone number of our Dial-Up: 851-1399.  Select Canada as your country code.  Click Next.  Click Finish.
  6. You will now have a new icon called DataNet in your "Dial-Up Networking" box. Click ONCE over the DataNet icon (do NOT double click the icon - if you do, click cancel in the new "Connect To" window).  The DataNet icon will now be highlighted blue.  Click File, and then click Create Shortcut.  You will get a message "Windows cannot create a shortcut here.  Do you want the shortcut to be places on the desktop instead?" (or some equivalent.)  Click Yes.
  7. Again, click File, and then click Properties.
  8. A new box labeled "DataNet" will now open up. If you live in the 780 area code, uncheck "Use area code and Dialing Properties."  If you do not live in the 780 area code, or require the 780 for calls to Edmonton, leave the box checked.  Click on the "Server Types" tab at the top.
  9. Make sure the ONLY checked boxes are "Enable software compression," and "TCP/IP" (i.e. uncheck "NETBEUI," and "IPX/SPX Compatible, and any other advanced options that may be turned on").
  10. Click OK, and then close the "dial-up networking" box by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner of the box.  You have now successfully created the dialer to connect you to DataNet.  You are now ready to connect to DataNet!

To make the connection to DataNet:

  1. Double click the "Shortcut to DataNet" icon on your desktop.
  2. Fill out your "User name" as the first part of your email address (E.g. if your email address was example@datanet.ab.ca you would fill out your "User name" as example).  Once you have made a successful connection to DataNet you will never need to do this step again.
NOTE:  Only your primary login will connect you to DataNet.  Once connected you can check any of other email accounts with this connection.
  3. Fill out the "Password" field as the password for your email account.
NOTE:  If you check off the "Save password" box and make a successful connection to DataNet you can skip this step in the future.
  4. Now click "Connect" to connect to DataNet.  Once the login procedure is completed you will be prompted with a message saying so.  You are now ready to setup your email accounts.  Please start a web browser and browse to www.datanet.ab.ca/datanet.shtml by entering that address (exactly as shown) in the address bar and pressing return.
